One of my favorite stories is that of the Messenger Falcon. I first illustrated this story in Listening, and years later revisited it with the sculpture, Singer. God lived on the other side of the sky, and only the falcon of all the animals and birds knew where the hole in the sky was. The Shaman, when he needed answers from God regarding fertility, growing seasons, etc., would whisper questions to the falcon who would then fly through the hole in the sky, present the questions to God, then return through the hole and whisper the answers into the Shaman's ear.
