I have always loved Robert Heinlein's thoughts on art and humanity. In Stranger in a Strange Land he says that “a great master can sculpt an old woman and make you see the eighteen-year-old girl she still is inside”. I have always been interested in the essence of humanity, and wanted to create a simple symbol of the pure human spirit that we carry inside. As in many of my pieces, the wings of the figure in Essence symbolize spiritual or creative flight, and her larger eyes symbolize awareness.
